Why it matters

A tight home keeps the heat in. It keeps everything else in too.

New Brunswick homes are built and renovated to hold heat through long winters. That is a good thing, but sealed walls and windows also trap moisture, odours and stale air. Good ventilation gives them a way out.

  • Trapped moisture

Showers, cooking and even breathing add moisture. In a tight home it has nowhere to go, so it shows up as foggy windows and damp corners.

  • Stale air

Without a steady supply of fresh air, rooms feel stuffy and everyday indoor pollutants build up.

  • Cooking odours

Last night’s supper should not still be in the air this morning. A properly vented range hood clears smoke, grease and smells.

  • Bathroom humidity

A bath fan pulls steam out before it soaks into drywall, paint and ceilings.

What we install

Three ways to move air the right way

We supply, install and service all three, and our licensed electricians handle the wiring on the same visit.

Supply, install, service

Air exchangers (HRV)

A heat recovery ventilator swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air all day, while holding on to much of the heat you already paid for.

  • Whole home fresh air
  • Helps control winter humidity
  • Servicing and cleaning of units and ducts
Supply, install, service

Bath fans

A quiet, properly sized fan that vents outside clears steam and odours and protects your bathroom from moisture damage.

  • New installs and replacements
  • Vented outside, not into the attic
  • Wiring done by our own electricians
Supply, install, service

Range hoods

A range hood ducted outside removes cooking moisture, smoke and smells right at the source, before they spread through the house.

  • Supply and installation
  • Vented outside for best results
  • Electrical included

How an HRV works

Fresh air in, without throwing the heat out

Opening a window in February lets fresh air in and all your heat out. An HRV does the same job the smart way.

  1. 1

    Stale air goes out

The HRV pulls humid, stale air from areas like kitchens and bathrooms and sends it outside.

  2. 2

    Fresh air comes in

At the same time, it draws in about the same amount of fresh outdoor air.

  3. 3

    Heat is passed across

Inside the core the two airstreams pass each other without mixing, and the outgoing air warms the incoming air before it reaches your rooms.

Fresh air and stale air pass each other in the core. The heat moves across, the air does not mix.

Signs to watch for

Is your home asking for better ventilation?

If a few of these sound familiar, a new air exchanger, a better bath fan or a properly vented range hood could make a real difference.

  • Windows fog up or drip with condensation in winter
  • The bathroom mirror stays fogged long after a shower
  • Cooking smells hang around for hours
  • A musty smell in the basement or closets
  • Rooms feel stuffy, even when the house is clean
  • Your air exchanger is noisy, or you cannot remember the last service

Ventilation questions

Fresh air, explained

Have a question about your air exchanger, bath fan or range hood? Call or text and we will help you sort it out.

HRV stands for heat recovery ventilator. It is a type of air exchanger: it brings in fresh outdoor air and sends stale indoor air out, and the two airstreams pass each other inside a core so the outgoing air warms the incoming air. Most people use the two names for the same thing.

Sealing and insulating a home keeps the heat in, but it also keeps moisture, odours and stale air in. Mechanical ventilation like an air exchanger, bath fans and a range hood gives that air a controlled way out and brings fresh air in.

Yes. We supply and install bath fans and range hoods, and because Miller Heating and Cooling is also a licensed New Brunswick electrical contractor, our own crew handles the electrical too.

Yes. Like any equipment that moves air, an air exchanger needs regular attention to keep working well. We service air exchangers and clean both the units and their ducts. Ask about package deals that combine service and cleaning when you book.
